Buffalo Horn has the closest tone to the fabled Tortoise shell picks as it is made from the same material, Keratin. Although softer than Bone it is still very hard wearing and has a more rounded mellow tone.

"I'm a professional guitarist from Copenhagen and believe me when I say that I must have tried innumerable plectrums in all shapes and sizes. So well what I was looking for was a plectrum for my nylon string guitar, because I always thought that the regular plastic ones, sounded to artificial on the Spanish guitar (plastic against plastic I guess) and therefore; reaching for something bone-like was my initial idea in order to emulate the sound of a nail. And with the White Horn Plectrum this is the closest I've gotten so far. The sound, when playing on the nylon string, has now much more tone and dynamics - one could actually believe that this is the sound articulated by the nails - very nice indeed! I did also try it on my steel string guitar, but here the sound gets a little too shrill for my taste - mind you not in the actual tone - but mostly when you strike the string... But that's is another story. So button line - I believe that this plectrum is superb - is plays with such ease and sits well between your fingers and has a beautiful realistic tone on my nylon string guitar - check it out for yourself and see if you agree."
